Bastien David
composer

At the age of only twenty-eight, Bastien David is offered an artistic residence at one of the world’s most prestigious cultural institutions, the Villa Medici in Rome. Considered today as one of the most fascinating composers of the young generation, Bastien David possesses a personal and original musical language that allows him to take his listeners on incredible artistic journeys.

The press, describing as “an artist who has the power to invent the sound of the future”, has hailed his pieces for their audacity, their eclecticism, and their imagination. In 2018, he receives the Fine Arts Academy Award in Paris – a prize that will open numerous new doors for him.

Bastien David has composed works in a variety of fields, from instrumental to orchestral pieces, and all the way to electronic music. He is passionate about creating new sonorities and has undertaken an intense research in this domain, leading him to invent and construct novel instruments that had never existed before. During many years, he has worked on inventing a “metallophone in 12 tones”, a new type of instrument that produces mesmerising sounds.

Shortly after he graduated from the Paris National Conservatory of Music, he started receiving his first major commissions. His works have been performed by the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Instant Donné, 2E2M Ensemble, Court-circuit Ensemble, Zafraan Ensemble, Selini Quartet, Tchalik Quartet, Orchestre d’Auvergne, Aleph Ensemble and the Main Harmonique Choir.

Bastien David’s pieces are frequently performed in today’s most important festivals and concert halls, such as the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Printemps des Arts Festival in Monaco, the Impuls Festival in Graz, the Paris Philharmonie, le Messiaen Festival, the Festival de Radio-France in Montpellier, as well as the Radial System in Berlin.
