José Sanchez is one of the rare artists to enjoy an international career in two fields simultaneously, as a flamenco guitarist, and as a Baroque luth and theorbo virtuoso. An eclectic, passionate, and fascinating musician, he has toured the world both with celebrated flamenco artists and with numerous Baroque ensembles.
Inspired by his musical roots – flamenco and gypsy music – José Sanchez has been exploring a wide variety of musical genres and styles, ranging from Renaissance music to electronic, contemporary, Latino, and Celtic music.
Born into a Spanish-French musical family, José Sanchez began studying the guitar at the age of six. Very quickly, he was spotted by several renowned flamenco guitarists who were stunned by his virtuosity and his ingeniousness. He then traveled to Granada, to join the class of Emilio Maya, one of the greatest flamenco guitarists of our time, and studied with him for several years.
Following his studies, he stared an impressive career that brought him to perform all across Europe, the United States and Canada. He has participated in the show “What have you Become” by Aurélien Bory, which has been nominated at the Laurence Olivier Awards. As part of this project, he gave more than one hundred and fifty performances, in the most prestigious venues and festivals in Europe. He has also been featured in the project « Homoblablatus », created by the group La Otra Orilla, as well as in the show “Strates”, with the great Spanish flamenco singer Nino del Elche.
Most recently, he has collaborated with the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra and conductor Gilles Colliard, for a new project mixing orchestral music and flamenco.
Also a prolific composer, José Sanchez has written music for many orchestras, chamber ensembles, and soloists. Recently, his pieces have been performed in France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, England, and China. He has composed the music for award-winning albums, such as Chala’à Chala’o, Sous-entendu, Strates, Flamentropíak and Partita Flamenca.
In addition to giving masterclasses in flamenco guitar and Baroque theorbo in numerous institutions, he has also been serving as guitar professor at the High Music Institute of Bordeaux, as well as at the La Fábrica Flamenca music school, in Toulouse.
