Gurdain Rayatt
Gurdain Rayatt is one of the UK’s leading tabla players, acclaimed for his versatility and artistry across Indian classical, orchestral, and cross-cultural music. A disciple of the renowned tabla maestro Pandit Yogesh Samsi, he combines deep tradition with a contemporary vision that resonates with audiences worldwide. In the classical tradition, Gurdain has accompanied legendary artists such as Pandit Birju Maharaj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Aruna Sairam, Niladri Kumar, Rakesh Chaurasia and Anoushka Shankar.
His sensitive and dynamic playing has made him a sought-after accompanist for both instrumental and vocal recitals, as well as for Kathak dance. Equally at home in Western classical contexts, Gurdain has performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Welsh National Opera, including in the presence of legendary Indian music producer/composer A. R. Rahman for a presentation of his Raga Dance composition. His ability to bridge rhythmic languages has seen him featured in collaborations that bring the tabla into orchestral and operatic soundscapes.
Beyond the classical stage, he has explored diverse musical dialogues with artists and ensembles from jazz, blues, Brazilian, Afghani folk, and electronic music traditions. Collaborations include projects with Gorillaz, Shez Raja, Michael Messer’s Mitra, Kefaya, and Pagrav Dance Company, reflecting his openness to experiment while retaining the integrity of the tabla. Gurdain’s performances have taken him to prestigious venues and festivals including the Royal Albert Hall, Southbank Centre, Glasshouse Gateshead, Darbar Festival, WOMAD and Abbey Road Studios. Balancing tradition and innovation, Gurdain continues to expand the voice of the tabla on the global stage, bringing its rhythmic vitality to diverse audiences.
