Jazz saxophone

Joshua Redman has established himself for over three decades as one of the most brilliant and innovative saxophonists in contemporary jazz. Born in Berkeley, California, the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff, he initially hesitated between law and music, having been accepted to Yale Law School before ultimately following his artistic instincts. Shortly after moving to New York in 1991, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute competition, launching his international career.

A curious and unclassifiable artist, Joshua Redman has continuously reinvented his musical language. His discography includes over twenty albums on the Warner and Nonesuch labels, all praised by critics for their virtuosity and emotional depth. He has collaborated with some of the most iconic figures in jazz — Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Elvin Jones, Brian Blade, among others — and founded several major projects such as the SFJAZZ Collective and the James Farm quartet.

In 2023, he reached a new milestone with Where Are We, his first album on Blue Note. Marking a shift toward a more vocal and narrative approach, this introspective record blends reimagined standards and original compositions around the theme of American identity, in collaboration with vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa. The album has been praised for its sensitivity and relevance in a changing world.

Committed to an ever more free and expressive musical approach, Joshua Redman remains a central figure in today’s jazz scene — an artist in constant evolution, at the crossroads of lyricism, improvisation, and social reflection.
