Nelson Gómez

Mexican guitarrón and vocals

Franco-Colombian musician, composer, and instrumentalist, Nelson Gómez plays the guitarrón, a traditional Mexican acoustic bass. Born in Manizales, Colombia, he began his musical studies in the 1970s and founded several groups dedicated to traditional Colombian music during that time.

He has lived in France since 1982, where he continued his training at the Paris Conservatory, studying composition with Katori Makino and classical guitar with Francis Verba. He also studied arrangement and orchestration with François Théberge at the IACP (Paris Jazz School).

In 1996, he became a founding member of the group Recoveco, an ensemble internationally recognized for the quality and originality of its interpretations of Latin American instrumental music, particularly from Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil. The group offers a modern approach to traditional genres such as the Colombian pasillo and bambuco, the Venezuelan joropo and merengue, as well as the Brazilian choro and samba.

Alongside his own projects, Nelson Gómez performs in France as an accompanist for renowned soloists, including Venezuelan violinist Alexis Cárdenas and Russian violinist Sasha Rozhdestvensky.
